You’ve heard the mantra over and over, but it bears repeating again: moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Take care, however, to choose moisturizers that contain natural ingredients that are as free as possible from additives, chemicals and preservatives. You do not want to gain moisture by pumping harmful things into your system which will cause other problems in the long run. There are plenty of moisturizers available which use organic compounds and natural ingredients, such as aloe vera and tea tree oil. Moisturize your hands and face more often, as these areas are exposed more frequently to the elements.
Just because the sun is not beating down in the winter as obviously as it does in warmer months does not mean that it isn’t emitting harmful UV rays. Use sunscreen in the cold periods, as well. You will probably not need to reapply throughout the day, as you will likely not be sweating or swimming, all things that require additional applications of sunscreen. Just apply a light layer of sunscreen in the morning before going outdoors, and only on the areas of skin that will actually be exposed to the sun at any time.
Skin care plan – Moisturize from the inside out, by consuming plenty of water. Try to drink 8 glasses of water a day, which is reported to aid in keeping your skin hydrated. There is disagreement amongst professionals as to whether water ingested will actually make its way to the outer layers of the skin, but there are also many other benefits to the skin of drinking plenty of water. It will flush out toxins that can accumulate over time, blocking skin pores and causing acne.
Peels and masks are touted for their ability to regenerate the skin and encourage rejuvenation. However, these products and treatments can dry out the skin, particularly the commercial products with harsh chemicals and additives. Avoid having these treatments in the winter months, when your skin tends to be more dry anyway. If you must indulge in masks and peels, choose ones with natural, organic components. Try making your own at home, with citrus, herbs and essential oils.
